Rio Gtrande Gorge & River Valley, New Mexico, Fall 2004

The headwaters of the Rio Grande are less than a hundred miles north of Taos, in southwestern Colorado. The river gathers force as it moves south, carving out a steep gorge in the plateau just west of Taos. There is a turnoff at Pilar, that takes you through some state parkland then climbs the canyon wall in switchbacks on the west rim, to eventually become another two-lane highway that goes through the village of Carson towards Ojo Caliente and Tres Piedres. This upper of part of the gorge is some 600 feet deep in spots, and shows clearly the region's geologic history of volcanic flows overlying sedimentary rock. South of Pilar, Highway 68 runs along the canyon floor next to the river for over 20 miles, on the road south to Santa Fe.
